Some recommendations for activities in L’Escala:

  • Explore Ancient Ruins: Walk through the archaeological site of Empúries to see where Greek and Roman civilizations first landed in Iberia.

  • Visit Sant Martí d’Empúries: Stroll down the coastal path to this tiny, walled medieval village for coffee in a quiet square.

  • Taste Local Anchovies: Stop by the SOLÉS Anchovy Factory-Museum to learn about the salt-curing heritage and try the local delicacy.

  • Lunch by the Sea: Eat fresh seafood at a restaurant along the old town's seafront promenade.

  • Swim or Relax: Head south to Cala Montgó, a sheltered horseshoe cove with clear, calm water ideal for swimming or paddleboarding.

  • Shop! There are lots of local stores.

WINE TASTING

We will depart L’Escala at 1:45pm, so we should get to the Perelada Winery by 3pm. We will be getting a tour of the winery and then tasting 3 wines. We will depart at 5pm to return to the venue.

Perelada is a flagship winery of Empordà, one of the oldest wine regions in Spain. The winery's story begins in 1923, when the Mateu family – specialists in the metal industry and founders of the automotive firm Hispano Suiza – purchased Perelada Castle. The ambition was to revive the wine-making traditions that dated back to the 14th century, when the Carmelite monks produced wine for the whole region, as documented in the parchment papers of the castle library.
